A car owner who is trying to give more horsepower to his car would have to remove all the restrictions if the exhaust. You have to let the exhaust gases to flow smoother out of the vehicle. Because catalytic converters are very restrictive, many people opt for straight pipes for their cars and trucks. They eliminate the catalytic converters totally. Depending on the State you live in, this could be illegal but if you are using the car for performance or only for drag racing and not for everyday purposes, then it should not be an issue.
1. You have to raise your car or truck using high quality jack and jack stands. Make sure that it is secure to go underneath before doing anything with the car.
2. The next step is to find the catalytic converters on the exhaust system. This is an oval shape part of the system and it swells out. Depending on the year, it would have had some louvers or vents. Using a reciprocating saw with metal blades, cut your catalytic converter from the exhaust. Make sure that it is a perfect cut that will produce a straight line.
3. Get the replacement tubing that will be placed where the catalytic converter used to be and then mark the tubing using a permanent marker to cut the right length. Again, using the reciprocating saw cut the new tubing at the desired length.
4. Using the MIG welder, tack weld the exhaust tubing that is between the two cut sections of the exhaust. The tack weld is a small and fast kind of welding that secures two pieces together. This however is temporary. You have to make sure that the alignment is straight and that there are no gaps between the tubing before a permanent welding could be done.
5. Get your welding gloves and helmet on and fully weld the tubing together. Make sure always that the tube has no gaps to ensure that there are no leaks.
6. Take the jack away, clear everything out and test your car.

My Carputer - Which Operating System Should I Use?
If you are a newcomer to the field of car computers (carputers), you need to appreciate that one of the big design considerations is the amount of power which will be consumed by the computer. In a car, there is not the unlimited supply of power waiting to be tapped from a socket on the wall as you would have in your home. It all comes from the car battery, which has a finite capacity.
The charge level of the battery is continually being topped up by the alternator while the engine is running. Car manufacturers normally equip their car engines with alternators which are rated highly enough to allow the fitting of additional electrical equipment. Fitting a carputer with a high power consumption, especially if you have a powerful audio system in your car, could result in the alternator being unable to supply enough power to maintain the battery in a fully charged state. In addition, carputers often require to be fitted in enclosed spaces, which can make it very difficult to exhaust the excess heat generated by the circuitry. For these reasons, it is advisable to choose a motherboard and processor which have low power consumption.
The down side of using a low power processor is that it is a lot slower than the processors used in the latest cutting edge desktop PC's. This is not an issue for most of the applications which will run on a carputer. Computer games normally require intensive graphics processing. However, it is very unlikely that many carputer users will be interested in playing computer games in their vehicles. The ability to run the chosen operating system is therefore the main constraint which is imposed by the use of a low power processor and motherboard.
If You're using an Apple Mac then you'll want to use OS X. Statistically however, you are more likely to be using an X86 based PC.
With a PC, you have the choice of open source (one of the flavours of Linux), or MS Windows. You can put together a pretty impressive system using Linux, but it can be a tortuous exercise to get it properly configured. For some applications, the Linux software which is available is nowhere near as good as what is available for windows. For most people, MS Windows is the operating system of choice. It does not involve overly difficult installation and configuration, and there is a wide choice of application software available for MS Windows.
Currently, the version of Windows to use is Windows XP. Although SP1 for Windows Vista resolved many of the reasons for the poor reception Vista received when launched, it is still a resource hog. To keep the power consumption low, you should use a less powerful processor than the one in a desktop PC. It makes good sense to use XP for as long as it remains available for sale, as it will run better than Vista on a less powerful processor.
Encouragingly, it looks as though Windows 7 when it finally appears, will have more modest hardware demands. Virtually every reviewer of Windows 7 Beta has noted it both loads faster and runs faster than Windows Vista. My personal findings echo this. I am currently testing the Beta software on an Intel Atom platform which is the same as the one I use for my carputer. So far, it has given me absolutely no cause for concern regarding lack of performance. Bear in mind that this is still Beta code and there is a high probability that there will be a further performance improvement once the code is optimised for the production version.
For now, my recommendation is to stick with XP until Windows 7 is released. If the Beta is anything to go by, the production version of Windows 7 should be rock steady and will not place too high a demand on a low powered carputer design.
Here is how to install an exhaust fan in your bathroom. Always read the instructions on the box first. But before you start, there are a few additional things that you should know.
First, do not install the fan over the HVAC vents in the floor. You really do not want to pull the freshly heated or cooled air going into the bathroom directly to the outside. You want the moisture laden air to go outside.
Second, do not install over the shower.
After you have picked a location for your exhaust fan, push a screwdriver through the ceiling and go into the attic to ensure the space is clear. Now you are ready to install it.
Here is what you do.
- Mount two pieces of 2 x 4 lumber the width of the box between the ceiling joists.
- Place plastic sheeting over the space below and cut the hole.

API CJ-4 Diesel Motor Oils - A Must For 2007 & 2008 "On-Road" Heavy Duty & Pick-up Diesel Engines
If you or your company owns 2007 or 2008 diesel pick-ups or "on-road" heavy-duty diesel trucks, you may be wondering why the truck manufacturer is so adamant about using motor oil that meets the American Petroleum Institute (API) "CJ-4" specification in the engine. You may be wondering if you can "get by" with a motor oil that does not show this designation on the label. The answer is NO! You cannot "get by" with a diesel engine oil meeting the older API "CI-4" or "CI-4 PLUS" specifications in these engines. There is a high probability that expensive damage will be the result if you try.
How did all of this start? A few years back, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decided that starting in the 2007 model year, strict new limits were going to be placed on the emissions of on-road diesel engines in heavy duty and pick-up applications. This would limit the amount of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emitted by the exhaust pipe. The EPA determined that through a combination of engine redesign, ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) fuel and new engine oil technology, these new vehicles would cut harmful pollution by 95 percent.
The most important of these engine changes are the addition of exhaust after-treatment devices and increased exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates. Both of these changes demanded a dramatically different approach to formulating a diesel engine oil.
The exhaust after-treatment devices being used are "diesel particulate filters". These particulate filters remove soot from the exhaust allowing for much cleaner emissions. Collected particulate matter is cleared from the filter by burning it off at elevated operating temperatures. Older generations of diesel engine oils contained additives which can plug or damage particulate filters. The new CJ-4 engine oils have strict limits on sulfur, sulfated ash and phosphorus content. A plugged or damaged particulate filter is not only very expensive to clean or replace, it can cause severe drops in fuel economy due to increased back pressure.
Another important change mandated by the EPA was to lower the sulfur content of diesel fuel by a whopping 97%. Beginning in September 2006, the sulfur levels in diesel fuel (for on-road use) were limited to 15 parts per million (ppm) from 500 ppm. This was done so that the fuel would not damage the new exhaust after-treatment devices. This was a concern to many as sulfur was a vital additive that provided lubrication to fuel pumps and injectors. The fuel companies were not mandated to replace the sulfur with another component to provide pump and injector lubrication. It is a good idea to add an aftermarket fuel additive to your diesel fuel to prevent premature pump and injector wear. This is a good idea for all diesel engines using ULSD fuel. Make sure that the additive is designed to provide fuel system lubrication and that it is compatible with exhaust particulate filters and ULSD fuel.
With the exhaust filter removing the particulate matter from the emission, the task of removing nitrogen oxide is accomplished by increasing exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rates by as much as 35%. EGR devices redirect some of the exhaust gases normally emitted through the exhaust pipe, back into the engine. This rate increase generates more soot and acids as well as increasing operating temperatures. This was another reason for the radical changes in the design of the CJ-4 specification. These new hostile operating conditions require that the engine oil have a greater resistance to heat, a greater dispersant package to handle the higher levels of soot and a greater ability to prevent depositing and oxidation. CJ-4 oils are also less volatile which means that they are more resistant to consumption.
CJ-4 oils will offer the ultimate in performance and protection for post-2007 diesel engines. To remove the nuisance of fleets having to stock different diesel motor oils for trucks built before and after the 2007 model year, CJ-4 oils are designed to be "backwards compatible" with pre-2007 diesel engines. Fleet owners can stock only one CJ-4 diesel motor oil to service all of their diesel trucks.

An exhaust header modifies the exhaust system to prevent back pressure, meaning that the cylinders do not have to work as hard to push exhaust out as they do in a traditional system. There are different types of exhaust headers depending on the needs of the drivers, with some tuned for low performance and others aimed at high performance on the open road.
In a conventional exhaust system, after the cylinders combust, they push the exhaust out into the exhaust manifold, which routes the exhaust out of the vehicle through the exhaust pipe. However, the exhaust manifold can create a back pressure which pushes against the cylinder, meaning that it has to exert more energy to push the exhaust out and prepare for the next firing. As a result, some efficiency can be lost.
An exhaust header works differently, essentially creating a miniature exhaust pipe for each cylinder and routing the exhaust to a centralized collector which is much larger. The pipes of an exhaust header are bent to fit under the hood and cut to the same length so that the exhaust gases will arrive sequentially in the collector as each cylinder fires. This eliminates the back pressure problem and allows the cylinders to operate more effectively.
Aftermarket headers can be bolted in place of the stock cast-iron headers. Small block headers usually use 1-5/8-inch primary tubes and big-block headers use 1-3/4-inch tubes. An important consideration when choosing headers is quality of materials. Header tubing vary in thickness, but a good quality header should use between 18-gauge and 14-gauge tubing. The metal used in the header is also important. Some headers are mild-steel, which will rust and corrode over time. Headers can be coated, either with a ceramic coating or a high-temperature paint. Using 100% stainless steel construction eliminates the need for coatings, but it is usually out many buyer's budgets. When headers are shipped, they sometimes come painted. Be aware that this coating is only for rust prevention during shipping, and the paint will not hold up to the heat once the header is installed. When headers are added along with a cat-back exhaust and high-flow catalytic converter, you can usually gain 20-30 horsepower over stock.
In some cases, an exhaust header can be tuned to pull at the exhaust valve of the next cylinder and suck the exhaust out, meaning even less work for the cylinder. Drivers who desire more power for around town driving and better acceleration under a heavy load usually opt for a low performance exhaust header, while drivers who are looking for speed on the open road prefer high performance headers.
A variety of manufacturers make exhaust headers for a dizzying assortment of vehicles, and it is important to install the exhaust header designed for your car. Because exhaust leaks can be dangerous, the exhaust header should be installed with care, or professionally if there is any uncertainty. An improperly installed header could lead to an exhaust leak which vents into the cabin of the vehicle, causing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning in the driver and passengers.

Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of the Mitsubishi Evo 10 will allow you to make the right decision when buying a new Mitsubishi.
One of the first things, depending on where you are in the world that may come as a surprise to you but perhaps if you're in the UK it may not be as big a surprise as others is the modification packages available through Mitsubishi UK, mainly the Evo 10 FQ models, as in FQ320. That is, did you know that all of the Evo 10 models in the UK, as sold as a factory-official car through Mitsubishi UK, actually has a modified converted, factory ECU using EcuTeK tuning software?
That package of upgrades is on all the Evo 10s sold by Mitsubishi UK. On top of that, Mitsubishi UK then offer the Evo 10 FQ model, and the FQ model standing for a very quick car, has been available for quite some time now starting with the Evo 7 and then there's the Evo 8 and, of course, the Evo 9 and now the Evo 10.
The FQ320 Evo 10 comes with a package of generally HKS modified components including exhaust, hard pipe inlet kit, and some other body kit styling enhancements and things like that and the tuned ECU to bring it all together to make it into a nice reliable package that comes with a full factory warranty guarantee through the Mitsubishi dealer network and of course, Mitsubishi UK.
Another good bit of information is some of this tuning and mapping data is available through the EcuTeK ECU tuning network throughout the through EcuTeK partners. The tuning software that is used by Mitsubishi UK is obviously the tuning software that is used by EcuTeK around the world.
Through your local EcuTeK tuner, you can get the factory ECU in your Mitsubishi Evo 10 converted into a fully adjustable ECU and then increase the performance however what will obviously vary is the level of warranty that you'll get support from your local dealer.
Be very careful when you start modifying, if you choose to modify your Mitsubishi Evo 10. Because it's a brand-new car, it uses the new Flash Can technology ECU. Gone are the days where you can do some simple modification and upgrades with hard parts and expect a noticeable improvement in performance because, really, you can't achieve that anymore particularly with these newer models.
The Evo 10 ECU is smart enough to realize that there's been a modification done and what it will then start doing is detuning the performance that you were looking for as a result of say, for example, a modified exhaust and ultimately you can end up with less power than what you start with, obviously, with factory-standard parts. The advantage of converting the factory ECU to an adjustable one allows that all to be brought together as a complete package, tuned and designed to work in harmony with each other.
The Evo 10 has a dramatically different engine now from the previous models. It has an all-alloy block. It runs a higher-peak boost level, in fact, a staggeringly higher-peak boost level which, again, makes it even more important to choose your modifications carefully. Obviously, the orientation of the inlet and the exhaust manifolds on the Evo 10 is different to the Evo 9, having the inlet manifold at the front now with the exhaust manifold at the rear. Effectively, between the firewall and the engine is now where the turbo sits, which is the completely different orientation to the previous Evo 9 model. That's going to require a whole complete new jigging up of, obviously, exhaust systems and components to suit that model.
There's not a lot of carry over with the Evo 9 but, then again, we expected there's a pretty good reason why Mitsubishi had done that. From impressions, it's obviously to get the car a bit better balanced in its weight distribution because the exhaust manifold weighs more than the inlet manifold. By moving it backwards, it transfers a little bit more of that weight towards the rear of the car and in theory then obviously makes it handle better.
I'm not going to comment on the body styling or geometry setups or seating position because a lot of that these days is more so a personal choice but hopefully this information will help you if you are looking to buy a new Mitsubishi Evo.

Most of us like to turn heads with our bikes and the exhaust is a big part of that. A cool looking exhaust system can really enhance the appearance of your motorcycle. Plus the distinctive throaty roar of a Harley-Davidson engine comes from the exhaust.
But there is more to Harley exhaust systems than gleaming chrome and bestial growls. Understanding the function of your exhaust lets you choose the best one for your bike.
Dealing with Emissions
The full Harley exhaust is designed to deal with the output of an engine, dealing with environmental, aesthetic, and legal issues.
The converter is designed to change harmful chemicals in the emissions into something less damaging to the environment. It uses a catalyst to convert dangerous gasses, including carbon monoxide and unburned fuel into carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other innocuous compounds. Reducing harmful emissions is not only environmentally friendly - it is also required by the EPA.
The muffler control sound and sparks. Although many Harley owners like the roar of their engine, many communities have noise ordinances that limit how loud your bike can be. Mufflers don't necessarily just suppress sound. They can also be used to control sound to get the noise you want from your bike.
Performance Enhancement
Your Harley exhaust system has a strong effect on engine performance and power. A clogged or poorly designed system restricts the flow of exhaust and reduces engine efficiency. Consider a path from the gas tank through the engine to the exhaust. If any part of that path is restricted, the whole system slows down and that means less fuel to your engine and less power.
Most people understand that a clog in the fuel line reduces power but may not realize that a clogged exhaust can do the same. Clogs aren't the only problem. An inefficient Harley exhaust restricts the flow from the engine and that creates a backup which cuts performance. Well designed systems with smooth curves rather than sharp corners allow the exhaust to vent more easily and the engine to run better.
High vs. Low Mounting
Where you put your exhaust, a high vs. a low position, will generally be determined by the bike's use. High-mounted Harley exhausts are used for bikes that will be used on trails and off-road. These bikes get a lot of dirt and water coming their way and the pipes are mounted high to keep these contaminants from getting into the exhaust and clogging it.
The problem with high-mounted exhausts is that they aren't very passenger friendly. Street bikes are more likely to carry passengers and don't need the protection of high mounts. These motorcycles are more likely to opt for low-mounted exhaust systems.
Choosing the right exhaust system is key to both the look and performance of your bike so consider all of your needs before making your choice.
